I have become recently obsessed with Joy Division again, and the history surrounding that seminal time in music.

Joy Division, New Order and the Manchester music scene that exploded in 1989 at the worlds most famous night club.

The Hacienda was designed by Ben Kelly, and opened Fri May 21st 1982
Owned by Factory Records & New Order
Given Factory catalogue number FAC51
It consisted of a stage, dance area with bar, a cafe, dj balcony & a cocktail bar
Mike Pickering, Graeme Park & Dave Haslam were host DJ's

Live acts to play there included Madonna (in 1984), New Order, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Oasis, James, Blur, OMD and Echo & Bunnymen

In the 1990's drugs and gangs became a permanent fixture
Following a drug-related death and various shootings, the Hacienda was closed in 1997

The Hacienda was demolished in 2002 by Crosby Homes to make way for apartments, keeping the iconic name, which is provided under license from New Order's Peter Hook. He also owns the Hacienda and FAC51 trademarks

On a recent trip to Rotterdam with G-Star, I was blessed with the opportunity to stay at the Hotel New York - honestly, I had low expectations!

That all changed when I got my face shaved in the fully kitted barber shop, complete with Aqua De Parma mens fragrance shop, alongside old school chair wet shave with hot towel and head massage to follow - brilliant!

Fabulous hotel. The entry was phenomenal: vaulted ceilings, historic memorabilia on the walls. And then the room, can we still call it a room or should we call it a suite. It is tastefully designed to maintain the historic feeling but with updated and contemporary design. All rooms are different though, mine was 216.
Recommend a trip to the bar. It was a lively place even on a monday night. If my business travels take me back to Rotterdam I will definitely stay here again. Ranks in my top 100 Hotels of the world.

If you came to my humble abode in Los Angeles California, you would most certainly gaze upon one of my film icon screens, most of which are of Steve McQueen. My wife often wonders why I am obsessed with him, but after showing her these lost images, Steve choosing cloth and being kitted-out for a red-carpet soiree, she can once again stand to look at him ever-ynight whilst we drink red wine and try not to talk about work. These unpublished photos of Steve McQueen on a clothes-shopping spree in 1963 were taken by photographer John Dominis while on assignment for Life, an epic, several-day shoot that produced a number of iconic McQueen images as well as hundreds of outtakes – Dominis shot over 40 rolls of film, renting a sports car to keep up with the speedy star in and around Los Angeles.

McQueen, 33 at the time, showed up on this occasion in his wicked Jaguar XK-SS wearing cords, desert boots, a Baracuta jacket and a tweed cap.

The shop exudes traditional Ivy League style with its wood paneling, antique fixtures, wool tartan yardage, hunting prints, heraldic plaques, repp ties and scrimshaw lamps; not quite McQueen’s style, one would have thought, but he was obviously after some traditional threads. Or perhaps he was just trying to look a bit more mature; Paramount had just given him Gary Cooper’s old dressing room while making Love With the Proper Stranger with Natalie Wood, a serious Hollywood status symbol.

At the clothier, probably in Beverly Hills – can any of you eagle-eyed style fanatics identify it? – McQueen got fitted for a dark wool suit and a slim-cut classic dinner jacket (after trying on a shawl collar model he settled on a single-breasted peak lapel) to wear to a movie premiere with his wife Neile, which Dominis later documented. He also picked out some shirts, socks, ties and dress shoes, but apparently passed on the preppy silk braces. Of course, back then you could smoke while you shopped – especially if you were the King.

Los Angeles has a serious lack of quality men’s shops. We’ve been searching high and low and for the most part have come up empty handed. Matt forwarded me a blog post from Union on their new neighbor, Feal Mor, so we decided to head out to La Brea Ave. after having the best slice we’ve had thus far in LA at Village Pizzeria on Larchmont. While walking down La Brea Ave. we passed a window that immediately caught our eye (see pic above). After strolling in we were met by a rack of Gant Rugger shirts and then a greeting from the owner Blair Lucio. It turns out this is the first day his new retail store General Quarters has been open.

Since this is day one Blair is still settling in, but the store is already fantastic and absolutely refreshing when compared to the stores we’ve been to recently. The selection of apparel, jewelry (which Blair makes via his other business), bags, books, boots, etc… are heritage, nautical, aviation and automotive inspired in most cases. It’s a fantastic store as it speaks to me on many levels and the fact that he rides a Ducati Monster daily and parks in the store doesn’t hurt. The store will be evolving and we can’t wait to see what comes about. Can’t wait to see how General Quarters does in Los Angeles – we wish you the best Blair.

It’s not always the World’s Most Powerful and Expensive or World’s Most Exclusive or World’s Most Beautiful bikes that tickle our fancy, sometimes it’s the total opposite — especially if the heart and soul of the bike is pure. Such is the case with the Deus Canggu bike shop in Bali — an intersection of the authentic love of motorcycles with the pure functionality of its environment. The Australian crew most famous for crafting Orlando Bloom’s Mono motorcycle, Deus ex Machina, have taken up shop in the surf Mecca of Bali and made a homebase to practice two of their favorite activities: Surfing and Custom Bike Building. Genius, no? Build it and they will come, Deus figure, and so they did. And among their first creations is this Inari bike above, named after the Japanese spirit of fertility and success. The small moto is based on a 1976 Honda CB100, one of the most popular bikes throughout Indonesia, and has been heavily modified — beefing up its suspension and all almost doubling its displacement to 180cc. Given the remoteness and rugged terrain of Bali, Deus’ Canggu shop is focusing on making smaller bikes with robust suspension and easy-to-fix, simple mechanics. The bikes don’t have to be shiny and head-turning, they have to be reliable, functional and stylish. Not just content with surfing and building bikes (and beautiful Bali-made tanks), the Canggu complex will also house a showroom, art gallery, workshop facilities, photographic studio, artists studio, and surfboard shaping bay. Classic British outdoor clothing company Barbour has teamed up with Japanese designer Tokihito Yoshida to launch a new limited edition capsule collection for Autumn Winter 2010. J. Barbour & Sons, known for their iconic waxed jackets, was founded in 1894 and holds Royal Warrants from HM Queen Elizabeth II, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and HRH The Prince of Wales. A graduate of Kuwasawa Design School, Tokihito previously designed for companies including Blades Savile Row in Japan before founding his own brand, To Ki To, in 1997. Consisting of five waxed and three waterproof jackets for men, the inspiration for the new To Ki To range came from Barbour's rich archive, which goes as far back as 1908, along with technical innovations and a modern fit.

Have a look at this vintage Royal British Army watch by Omega. It dates back to the early 40's but this edition is in a hardly seen overall shape. These 'broad arrow' Omega watches are the most searched after editions for any watch collector. The only thing I dislike about this particular watch is the cheap NATO strap that comes with it. According to a well respected client of ours the best way to get your strap in harmony with a vintage piece is to put it in black tee for a day or two. Nothing odd about that compared to burying your denims in the garden for six months don't you think?

It weighs 4.8 ounces), black glass and stainless steel body, and with split buttons for volume, unlike the current iPhone 3GS. Featuring an Apple A4 processor, seven hours of talk time, a front-facing camera (640 x 480) FaceTime video calls and an LED flash alongside its new 5-megapixel camera on the back, a 3.5-inch Retina Display(the same size as current iPhones, higher resolution (960 x 640). The price? The 16GB iPhone 4 will sell for $199, and the 32GB for $299. The phone will be available in black or white on June 24th.

With retailers already digitizing catalogs for online use, it's easy to imagine distributing catalogs through iPad. Retailers like Home Depot, Best Buy and Williams Sonoma, especially, could benefit from the ability to embed video of product demos, while apparel retailers could easily include styling advice from designers.

Gap's 1969 Stream app, launched earlier this month, takes that idea one step further with a social-shopping experience that includes content from designers, musicians and fashion insiders, the ability to purchase items (or share them with a friend) without leaving the app and a geo-locator to find the nearest store. It includes a music video from Truth & Salvage, a video of Jay Sario from "Project Runway" dressing consumers in Gap denim, photos of celebs wearing Gap and tweets from designer Patrick Robinson.
